Cosmo Girl
When I was 20, fresh out of a three-month marriage that I thought would last forever, I moved into a small studio apartment. I didn't know how to live by myself. I felt uncomfortable, antsy. Felt weird without a male nearby.
One day I picked up a Cosmopolitan, and there was an article, “How to Live by Yourself and Like It”. It had hints like fix yourself a fabulous candle-lit dinner, take a lovely bubble bath with music and rose petals, don't just slob around—dress for yourself.
I took those tips to heart. I still have the Cosmo recipe for Orange Chicken with Rice. It seemed so sophisticated at the time compared to mashed potatoes and meat loaf. That article served me well.
Now, thirty-six years later, living on my own again, I've been feeling a little overwhelmed, uncomfortable, talking to the dog way too much. I've been thinking fondly of my younger Cosmo Girl. I think it's time to resurrect her. I think it's time to consider life as an adventure. I think Orange Chicken would be lovely for dinner tonight.
