Audiobooks: Continued
I just finished the audiobook version of Ireland authored and read by Frank Delaney. Good stuff. His lovely Irish accent added so much to telling the tale. As I listened, I had Google Maps opened to Ireland so that I could see the location of the story teller as he made his way around the country.
As luck would have it, the last of the sixteen CDs was scratched and I couldn't make out the ending. I went to the library and checked out the hard copy of the book so that I could read the last few pages. Wow, what a difference seeing the names of the people and places in the book as opposed to listening to the names and places. Caught me by surprise.
Not knowing much about Irish history before I listened to this book, my only desire left unsatisfied is how the Republic of Ireland was formed. I guess that's another book.
My next audiobook that I've started on is True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. So now, I'm in Australia in the late 1800's. The reader is a guy from Australia with an Irish-Australian accent as far as I can tell. Once my ear got used to his voice, it was easy to immerse myself in the story. And, of course, I have Google Maps opened to Australia so that I can follow along.
I love reading words, I love writing words, but listening to words is special. And listening to a story being told as I crochet BillyBob's afghan is special too. Needless to say, the TV is being turned on less and that's a good thing.
