Good question. I've been
trying to find numbers like a dog
chasing her tail. What I did find is
that there is no way to determine how
many personal homepages are on the Web.
You may get a few stats on commercial
sites, marketing statistics, but with the
exception of information gathered by
Pamela O'Connell of the Mining Company,
you will find almost nothing on personal homepage statistics.
Wait. I take that back. You will run across factoids like this:
"The average length of a homepage was just under 3 screens. Most homepages had personal information (96 percent). Six percent were heavily biased towards an interest area, and 7 percent were biased towards professional information (see sections 3.2 and 3.3 below). Eighty percent had a mechanism to solicit feedback, either a mailto, link or a link to a comment form. Twenty-one percent of all the pages were linear in form, such as homepage #51 which is located in Appendix 7. Multi-document, table of contents type homepages made up 39 percent of the sample, and homepage #22 in Appendix 7 is an example. The remaining 40 percent were what I called "string" type multi-document pages, . . . " [Alison's Thesis] |

What's an enquiring mind to do? I decided to come up with my own stats. Mu-hahaha!
1. World population as of December 5, 1997 2:24 PM EST: 2. Web User population as of May 10, 1997: 3. Web Users who have a personal homepage as of September 8, 1997 (16.5% = avg between 20% and 13%, results from Find/SVP and NFO surveys): Rounded up, that's: And I don't think that figure may sound as far-fetched as you might
think considering that as of May 97 the
"top six homepage providers" (Geocities,
Tripod, Angelfire, AOL, Prodigy,
Compuserve) had 2.21M personal hompepages.
I'm sure there's easily another 2.79M
personal homepages scattered around other
ISPs and educational servers throughout
the world.
For a breakdown on just how
much personal homepages are up from just
last year, check out the stats
Pamela O'Connell came up with.
I throw in the world
population number also to give
you some perspective:
has a personal homepage. We, as personal homepage
owners, should always appreciate the
fact of how fortunate we are to have this
opportunity that a majority of the
world does not have.
