Cave paintings are expressions of the culture of historic people. They document the history of their people and time period. Cave paintings are like very early hieroglyphics, but of a different culture.
Cave paintings began about 35,000 years ago by prehistoric man. They used bone for brushes, animal hair for tips, and juices for paint.
Each one tells a story. A lot of cave paintings were found in Lascaux, Southern France. These paintings show pain, like the loss of a finger, or happiness, like a new child. Cave paintings are also found in Australia, Europe, and the western United States.
Cave paintings help people of today's world understand and study what it was like to live in prehistoric times.
