SEARCHING

Updated my resource guide today—mostly a potpouri of search engine and usability and accessibility links. A couple of unique search engines were:

One that's not listed yet is Glossarist, which specializes in searching...

Webable's accessible links: covering browsers, OS, validation, tools, screen readers, and more.

Registration Revamp: making online registration process easier for users. Imagine that.

From Usability.gov, Lessons Learned: helpful suggestions on what they learned when designing CancerNet.

Southpaws go here.

Welcome back to fem•mass Melissa Hayhurst, single mom in the Bible Belt.

From The Erotic Journal of Martha Stewart, Tasteful Protection: colorful maxi/mini pads by Martha.

BRASS TACKS

Rude awakening today when I discovered my unemployment runs out this week. I consider it a major accomplishment to have not run screaming out of the house yet. Re-budget, re-knuckle down.

While I had my head in web design clouds, Eudora Welty died on July 23rd. Here's NPR's commentary (RealPlayer).

Along those lines, an oldie but goodie, Eudora: How a Southern writer came to lend her name to a computer program.

Spend an indefinite amount of time at the Smithsonian checking out a few of their favorite things. Interesting interface.

From the people who brought you the eye tracking study last year, this year it's Color, Contrast & Dimensions in News Design. Covers color theory, color on the web, and, of course, their Eye Trac Research.

A warmer sans serif font?

Isn't it kinda cute when Dave connects with Blogger?

BUSINESS WOMAN HEAD

Have had my business woman head on the past few weeks. Launched Statue of Unity this morning. You might have heard of Dennis Normandy's proposed project to build a monument on Treasure Island that would be a complement to the Statue of Liberty. Scott proposes an alternative statue to the amputated arm of the Statue of Liberty in the picture. I will watch and see how this develops.

This project has had me taking care of business. Here's the IRS site for the small business and self-employed community. Go here for information on Estimated Tax. From Idea Cafe, 1099's and Independent Contractors, and their sample of an Independent Contractor Agreement. I also ordered my 1099-MISC's, 1096's, and W-9's at 1-800-829-3676.

New front door on Makes Grown Men Cry. I kept trying to create a more humorous and light design, but these images kept resurfacing. So, I turned off the editor and let the spirit have it's way with me. I'll save the psychoanalyzing for somewhere down the road. If you miss the old front door, you can always find it here. After last year's massive archiving in celebration of my five years on the Web, I have learned to preserve webpages.

Did a little interview with Maxim. No, they weren't asking about my little guys. Oddly enough they were interested in my Michelle Web Domination Campaign. Mu-haha!

The government has been watching my house and I didn't even know it. Oh no, they're watching Mama's too. Hep me Jesus.

Had to see how the corn was coming along so far this year. Just how high is an elephant's eye anyway? They're growing soybeans in the same field as last year's CornCam, but I don't find that nearly as fascinating. Trying to get my timing down so that I can see all the action at the milking parlor courtesy of DairyCam.

F-18's and U2's firing up at Moffett Field for the past couple of weeks. This weekend is the airshow at Moffett. Maybe there will be an Apache helicopter there. Yes, I have a soft spot for Apache helicopters. It's right there next to my soft spot for fire engines...which is next to my soft spot for Countachs...which is next to my soft spot for Harleys...
