THE OTHER WORLD
2:31P

Been awhile since I've checked in. I've been living in the other world, the world where I go when I create, the world where pictures come first, words come second, and html comes last. I can go to the store, to work, to bed, but it all feels underwater because my head is still in the other world.

Of course, I can't stay there for too long as it sucks up too much of that vital essence and before you know it husbands have left and children have grown. Well, it seems that way. Usually by the end of two weeks, I'm screaming for some HTML to transition into, and Honey begins lookin mighty tasty.

I did manage to scribble down three urls:

Sun: BigAdmin, for sysadmins (not just solaris os). Thanks, Robert!

Are you hot or not. Cheap thrills.

City Carshare, an alternative to owning a car.

And here's your dose of Friday Fun: This only takes 10 seconds…

National Discount Brokers

SHAKEY PUDDIN
5:32P

Eleven years ago we had a big one here in the Bay Area. Fortunately for me, I had a optometrist's appointment and so was not in my ninth floor office, the one that had the most damage on campus. Oddly enough, I wasn't able to draw or write for a couple months afterwards.

Just a few links today:

Macinblog, public blog for Mac OS X.

MacSlash, a daily dose of Mac News and Discussion.

Always looking for a good image, here's John Foxx Images, royalty-free images.

The Web reaches 'mass consumer market in the United States'. Surfing is now a myth. That's nice.

Andreas' Guide to Jobs in Technical Writing, aimed at those who work here in the Bay Area.

Last but not least, good story: How I Started a Dot-Com for Dogs.

WEBMISTRESS HAT
2:05P

Been busy with the behind-the-scenes reorganizing of five years worth of Web images. And then I have to go in and change the image url in every single html file. Geez.

After pleading my high transfer rate plight to the Silicon Valley Webgrrls, and to the WiseWomen, and to a friend, I think I might have a solution in the works.

With my Behosting sysadmin, Erica, we're setting up a directive to be added to my new /img/ folder. Basically, when any image from that folder is requested by a browser, the image is served if someone clicks one of my internal links. If the request comes from somewhere else (image/bandwidth theif), they will get an alternate image instead. Mu-haha!
Thanks to everyone for helping me get this far. I love ya, man.

I've also been working on my fifth-year anniversary page which will go live on November 1st. So, I've been doing a lot of archiving. I'm amazed I'm missing only one image. But I'm such a packrat, I still have hardcopies of email from 1995.

Here's some links that have been collecting on my Palm:

Mundi Design, see their Web Color Theory.

Apple Error Codes. Also has good list of troubleshooting links.

Dori Smith's weblog. Little Miss JavaScript herself.

Another WiseWoman, Maki Itoh's article on debugging Javascript.

E*Trade not secure.

Download this Palm antivirus to combat the new Palm virus.

The Obscure Store, better than the reading the National Enquirer in the checkout line.

Craig's Periodically.com. I like his quote: "One of the symptoms of anb approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important."

You can't tell it yet, but I'm learning how to do the HTML 4.01 mambo. Weaning myself off of the deprecated tags. Learning about the differences in browsers.

Top Ten Resume Mistakes.

GETTING DINGED
7:46A

After running an excessively high transfer rate for awhile now, I'm in the process of tracking down why. When I moved to my new web-host, I didn't put Heartless up except for some temp pages. I checked the stats this weekend and found that I got a lot of 404's on images, not html files. It seems some sites have copies of some of my more popular pages on their sites and I'll deal with the copyright violation later, but others just copy the pages and keep my image urls intact. They get the traffic, I get dinged on the transfer rate. A temporary solution would be to rename the graphics once the pages go back up, but I want a better answer. Hmmm…

On the brighter side, if you ever seen the 7-up series that traces the lives of the same group of people every seven years, you'll want to check out Miles's series of life pictures. I found it interesting to do this type of experiment myself. Hard on the ego, but it can say a lot to you. Also, see his links to other people creating a similar experience.

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE HOLE
11:16A

Here I am, still feelin pitiful, but holey moley, look what's perking me up:

Libida.com, 'the spot for female sexuality'. WooHoo! Interesting articles: Banging the Gang, a failed attempt at winning a million dollars by some women for the biggest gangbang (not enough men showed up); Tips and Techniques, blowjob techniques with 'Joy of Sex' type illustrations. Of course, this site has great possibilities. How could it not with the ever-lovely Anne Semans (formerly of Good Vibes) as part of the team.

And speaking of holes, I took down my Heartless's Holey Haven for reVAMPing. Also doing a little detective work, as my transfer rate has been out the roof, and I suspect a little hijacking of mostly Stupid Penis Tricks graphics. I don't mind when people have a SPT or two on their webpage, but what really chaps my hide is when they take whole pages.

Back to the couch…

UNDER THE WEATHER
4:26P

Been down with flu-like symptoms for a couple of days, but did manage to haul my butt last night to the Outback in Campbell to help Miss Wendo say good-bye to an online community. She'll be saying hi to a pda manufacturer on Monday, and I'm looking forward to goodies.

I've been following the growing of corn this summer. They had a hail storm, but faired pretty good in this field last month. Harvest is scheduled in 12 days. The excitement. I see they'll be selling corn from this particular plot; hope they do it online. That would be cool. I really don't know why I am so fascinated by this.

I began my One for the Money book by Janet Evanovich. No "Fugitive Pieces", but it does have some snappy dialogue and a very likable main character, Stephanie Plum.

SandyBoy will be moving from California to Washington DC and promises to keep writing his Screed. In his 092300 entry, he tells how he got his Xterra and how the Web helped. Good car links for those searching.

I received my VisiBone's HTML cards. At first glance, they're a little hard to read, but in action they're faster on finding info than my Hip Pocket Guide to HTML 4.01.

And last but not least, WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? Go Giants!

Now, back to the couch…
